Chapter 28. Day 5, late evening.

For my level eight upgrade the choice was simple. One option stood out well above the rest. It was no contest.

[Hourglass, passive]

Every 24 hours, increase the [time counter] by one. Consume up to 4 [time counters] to increase Action Speed by 25% for each [time counter] for a duration of 25 seconds per [time counter.]

“Where’s the illusionist?” I asked Sofie.

Sofie shrugged. “I’m afraid he’s rather shy.”

“Tell him thanks, he saved my ass.”

“No need, I’m quite certain he can hear you.”

“Are we going to meet him at some point? Does he need to eat or drink?”

“Maybe, but he’s very ... committed to hiding.”

One of my crows that had flown south, followed the three bandits with their heavy chest. They might have made it out alive if not for their greed. It had slowed them, and they didn’t make it far. Kyra was right about the gnolls.

Before fetching the chest, we wanted to loot what we could here. There was no saving the other wagons. The one that survived was loaded with food. Crates and barrels of it. Salted pork, bags of flour, cheese, lentils, dried fish and fruit, jars with beer, strips of meat jerky, honey, and crocks of ghee. It was enough to feed an army, though maybe only for one meal. Sofie and Kyra helped me to load my void locker to the full, all eight cubic meters of it.

“What was up with the explosion, that bomb that you threw?” I asked Kyra.

Kyra rolled her eyes. “The bloody timer on it is random. How stupid is that, eh?”

“Like what? It could take hours?” I asked.

“Nah, not that stupid. Anywhere from a minute to three.”

My right elbow had swollen up, turned shades of red and blue. The healing potion seemed to be working, but was taking its time. I also had bruises across my body where my plate armor didn’t cover.

I turned my shield into a basket for the time, activated Sense Iron and skirted around the fires to collect what I could from the fallen gnolls and bandits. But I had little time to do it, and I was running low on space in the locker too.

“We best get going, all sorts of nasties will be here as soon as they get a whiff of the fire and the dead,” Kyra said.

We followed the wagon trails back the way we rode in. The trio of bandits didn’t make it far, just past the first turn. Their leader was bloodied up and his breathing was ragged.

His cocky attitude was gone. “What the hell are you?!”

I ignored his question. “What are you doing with my chest?”

He looked from side to side at his fallen companions, and spat blood at the heavy chest beside him.

“You should have stayed and helped,” I said. “And maybe you would have lived to tell about it. But now, ... well.” I unsheathed my sword.

“I have another healing pot-” Sofie said.

“No need,” I said. “Not for the likes of him.”

“W-Wait, don’t kill me,” he said.
